Garden Club donates trees to Colonia de la Palmita
By Suzanne Mir
Giving trees to the local communities of San Miguel has long been a commitment of the Garden Club of San Miguel de Allende and this year is no exception. With the cooperation of Luis Franke, local grower, together with his sons and the residents of Colonia de la Palmita, new trees have joined the prior gifted trees donated by the Garden Club in 2009. In keeping with the original donation, the recent trees are a mix of Chinese elm, Arizona ash, Mexican maple and alder.
It should be noted that while the Garden Club enabled this project with the donated trees, the community made it a success. Local organizer Octavio Sanchez and his committee of volunteers, completed the planting of the 2009 project and have maintained the trees, which continue to thrive.
There is a strong commitment within the community to continue enhancing the property where the original trees were planted. This year, volunteers gave of their time and energy to hand-dig the required holes for the new trees. Their families were on hand to support them as well as the Garden Club’s Tree Committee members who served cold beverages and cake.
The Garden Club’s commitment to donate trees is not just a beautification project. Scientific research has shown how important trees and foliage are to the health of a community, particularly one like San Miguel, which experiences windy months. Acting like filters, tree foliage plays an important part in keeping the air clean by reducing airborne germs and dirt.
If you’d like to support the Garden Club’s efforts to make more trees available to more communities, contact any Garden Club member for more information. Your donation would be a wonderful way to recognize a friend’s birthday, to welcome a new neighbor to the block, or to congratulate new parents celebrating a new arrival. The Garden Club of San Miguel will send or give you a gift card acknowledging your donation in honor of the recipient.
