Calderoni Christmas at the Art Walk

By Judy Payne

Merry Calderoni’s lastest series, “Relics,” will be the centerpiece for the First Friday December 5 Art Walk . If you have missed the latest exhibit you will have a surprise in store, as it is a departure from her last few series. The gallery and studio (once the blacksmith shop of the 100-year-old textile factory) is the source of all the subject matter or content in this latest work. Having inherited many rusty metal pieces from discarded machinery and tools, Calderoni has implemented these relics and found objects in clever and enigmatic ways. Some of them are identifiable, and others lost to another time. They range in tone from rich neutrals to bright hues, and each has a “personality” that merges inseparably into the paintings. The reference to the factory is also present in the use of cotton manta, the textile once produced at La Fabrica Aurora. This fabric carries a message from the Fabrica’s distant past, thus adding to the overall work another layer of meaning or contemplation. Calderoni describes the series as “old relics juxtaposed against contemporary paintings. Incorporating these antique pieces into modern work has been a pleasure and a challenge.”
