Fifty-ninth anniversary of La Biblioteca
By Jade Arroyo
La Biblioteca is one of the most emblematic institutions in San Miguel de Allende. It is one of the main sources of support for education and culture in the city, particularly focused on the younger generation, offering not only the lending of books (which is a noble achievement in itself) but also various artistic, literary and musical workshops, as well as a multidisciplinary forum for expression and a theater and cinema presenting art films and community theater. It has been a breath of life for 59 years, a time full of tireless cultural and philanthropic work.
Throughout this month various celebratory activities for children and adults have taken place, ending on November 21, when they closed with a flourish — a traditional callejoneada took place, going through the streets from the Jardin to the Biblioteca, followed by the singing of Las Manañitas and a live presentation of favorite opera arias, boleros and contemporary pieces by the beautiful soprano Gabriela Perales, accompanied by Sergio Basurto on guitar and harp.
A lecture about the history of this important building was given by the historian Graciela Cruz. La Biblioteca wishes to acknowledge with love the Tuna Provinciana de Allende, the historian Graciela Cruz, Gabriela Perales, soprano; Jose Luis Mendoza and Ginna Acosta, Gaby Urbina and Giovanni Soria; Marvel Band, Joe Miller, David Godinez, Sergio Basurto and especially the staff of the library for their work, support and enthusiasm.
