The cuisine of the Toad and the Dove

They are a legendary couple for Mexico and the world, so dear to us that we don’t need to mention their last names — for us they’ve became just “Frida and Diego.” The Friducha and the Toad Prince embody the quintessential sense of Mexican culture and art. And we can’t get enough of their lives.

Honoring this mythic couple of painters and their artful lifestyle, a festival was offered, named “La Cocina de Diego y Frida” (The Kitchen of Diego and Frida) organized by the Foundation Diego Rivera and Rosewood San Miguel. This event was based on dishes that were prepared in Frida’s kitchen and eaten with great enjoyment by her beloved husband.

Beyond time and distance, these recipes are immortal and synonymous with true Mexican flavor. The dinner parties thrown by the couple at the Blue House of Coyoacan were famous, and outstanding personalities of the time, artists and intellectuals, attended the lively soirées. The inauguration was November 15, and for 10 days the restaurant 1826 has been transformed into the dining room of the Blue House, where everyday a menu featuring the dishes served by Frida and Diego is enjoyed.

Diego López Rivera, grandson and general director of the Foundation Diego Rivera A.C and Guadalupe Rivera Marín, representatives of the Rivera dynasty, personally approved — and tasted — each and every one of the recipes. These delicious events were enhanced by an exhibition of some personal items of the couple such as brushes, easels, clothes and even original documents. The inauguration of the festival was held Friday 15th in the presence of the Riveras and guests from the San Miguel cultural and social scene.
