On Saturday, November 23, Canon White will lead an all-day conference entitled “A one-sided conversation: What can we believe about prayer?” in St. Paul’s Parish Hall. The three sessions during the day, beginning at 10:30am, include dialogues on Prayer and the Bible, Julian of Norwich and Simon Weil, and Thomas Trahern and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, each followed by open discussion time.

On November 25, 26 and 27, Monday through Wednesday, two self-contained drop-in sessions will be held each day at 10:30 and 1:30 at the Church. Canon White will include dialogues with additional writers, including Nicholas Ferrar and T S Eliot, Aselm of Canterbury and William Fiennes on Monday; Wilfred Owen and Gerard Manley Hopkins and The Song of Songs and Elaine Pagels on Tuesday; Charles Peguy and Dag Hammarskjold, and finally Abraham and Isaac, Henry Moore and Benjamin Britten on Friday.

The Conference and Drop-in Sessions will attempt to remove some of the inhibitions fueled by a sense of inadequacy or guilt when it comes to praying. Canon White admits, at times, to prayer “dyslexia” in his own life and believes the key to overcoming these inhibitions is by sharing our personal experiences, be they positive or negative. Reflecting on the works of well-known authors and unsung heroes will also offer insights and food for thought as participants explore this opportunity for personal growth, strength and enlightenment. These honest appraisals of the significance or absence of prayer in our daily lives isn’t limited to the Christian religious tradition, so every contribution to this conference is equally valued.

The cost of the Saturday conference is 300 pesos includes lunch, and reservations should be made through Rev Lucie Thomas. Each weekday drop-in session is self-contained, so register for one day or all three, or just drop in. A donation of 100 pesos is requested for each session. If you can’t make the conference, catch Rev Canon White’s message on November 24 at St. Paul Church’s regularly scheduled Sunday services.
