These small works of the female nude are a tour de force of the painter’s craft. Beautifully described, her command of the anatomy and gesture of the female form is doubly enhanced by the subtle and sensuous rendering of skin and flesh. Add to that the various elegant combinations of background color and you have a winning effect. Here and there, the artist casually drops in a single added element that elaborates the figure, surprising the observer in a meaningful way. A feather boa, a necklace, a robe, or an earring take the picture beyond a studio study.
These beautiful small paintings have a timeless quality, located in the contemporary for sure, but in the past as well; the mystery figures of Roman fresco come to mind, as do the odalisques of Corot, and the figuration of the post fauve Andre Derain. Small in size, the artist has given them a sense of large-scale behavior. It adds up to a superlative show.
The 20 or so paintings in this collection are derived from several sources. Initiated by the discovery of sketches long hidden and recently retrieved, Mizwa turned them into these iconic works. Her remarkable grasp of anatomy is both intuitive and educated by years of studying, working, and teaching in the healing arts. The resulting images are magisterial examples of artistry and devotion to the practice of painting.
Along with the two opening days of Friday, November 1 and Saturday, November 2, the exhibition will run through to the end of the month of November at Fine Art Studio, local 2D, in La Fábrica Aurora.
