Audubon autumn outing to Hacienda Las Trancas

By Gordon Fulton

Audubon de Mexico has a great new destination near San Miguel de Allende to celebrate the migrating birds and turn of the season.

We’ll be heading out to the community of Las Trancas, about 10 minutes north of Dolores Hidalgo. This tidy little town is home to the 450-year-old Hacienda Las Trancas, owned by organic farmer Kelley Wilkerson. The hacienda is so beautiful it will take your breath away.

Morning Walk at Presa El Gallinero

Our day will start by meeting at 9:45am for ride sharing to the Presa El Gallinero, just five minutes away from the Hacienda gates. We’ll enjoy a leisurely walk and bird watching along the water with three experienced Audubon guides to help point out and identify the birds.

Hacienda Las Trancas

At noon we’ll drive to the Hacienda where your preference of a welcoming margarita, glass of wine, or agua fresca will await you. We’ll then join the Hacienda staff for a private tour of this magnificent Mexican “castle,” including the rooms, garden, horse stables and vineyard. We’ll learn about the Hacienda’s history and hear intriguing stories of hidden treasure, secret tunnels, murder, love and betrayal, and revolutionaries such as Father Miguel Hidalgo and Pancho Villa.

After our tour, we’ll enjoy a traditional Mexican meal prepared in the Hacienda kitchen, which is known far and wide for its delicious food, made with fresh local ingredients.

Join Audubon on Saturday, November 16, for a great day experiencing the pleasures of our bountiful region and helping to support Audubon’s Environmental Grant program, which invests in projects that restore and conserve the precious and fragile nature and natural resources of San Miguel.

“If it’s good for the birds, it’s good for people!”
