Volunteer of the Month

By Katelin Cannon

Katheleen Ellsworth

Each month, we recognize one of our manyvolunteers whose work is so valuable in keeping La Biblioteca educational programs free-of-charge. Their work – whether with library books, in the Bodega de Sorpresas, on the House & Garden Tour, or with Atención – makes a great impact on the local community; plus, volunteering at La Biblioteca is fun!

In October, we honor Kathleen Ellsworth as Volunteer of the Month at La Biblioteca. A dedicated volunteer, Kathleen has been a part of the Biblioteca family for nearly 7 years and works tirelessly in various capacities. Here’s our interview with Kathleen:

Biblioteca:How and why did you become a volunteer at La Biblioteca?

Kathleen Ellsworth: I came to a community meeting that was discussing an Atención article and afterward attended the monthly public meeting with the board. One of the people presenting the status of library books was Robin Velte.  I was impressed with her presentation and asked her later if she needed volunteers.  I have been with the Biblioteca ever since!

B:Where are you from and what brought you to San Miguel?

KE: My husband and I are originally from the Costa Mesa/Newport Beach area of California. Years ago, we visited some friends who had bought a house in San Miguel during a bus tour of Mexico. We became as smitten with San Miguel as they had, and it wasn’t long before we made this our full-time home!

B:Can you tell us about the many hats you wear as a Biblioteca volunteer?

KE:I work as the volunteer coordinator, help put books into the catalogue, review donations, am on the English Book Committee that helps decide what books to order for the library, and I order books when the decision is made. I also try to hold two special book sales per year (the money goes toward purchasing new books), and I review books that are considered valuable. I have an absolutely wonderful group of volunteers that helps me accomplish all these tasks. We work as a team for the benefit of the community and have a lot of fun doing it!

B: What is your favorite part of volunteering at La Biblioteca?

KE:I am always delighted when I can help a visitor with questions. I love that our staff and volunteers are a great group of people who work hard and get so much work accomplished.

B: What do you see for La Biblioteca in the future?

KE: I see progress being made in the programs offered at the Biblioteca for the community of SMA.  We are constantly trying new programs and working on existing programs to make them better.  I see lots of progress in the understanding between the ex-pat and local Mexican communities, as this is a place where they come together.

B: Can you tell us something we may not already know about you? Hobbies, interests, or a motto you live by?

KE: I also volunteer for Feed the Hungry and ProMusica. I play hand bells and recorder for fun, belong to a book club, and have been doing lots of research on ancestry for my grandchildren.  I manage a ranch and have the opportunity to feed the chickens, ducks, burros, and horses, grow corn and alfalfa, and hope to start a garden next spring

I live by the motto of trying to have fun in all that I do; with this in mind, I have had the opportunity to meet many wonderful people along the way!

B: Kathleen, thank you for all you do!
