Have you heard of the local nonprofit Casa de los Ángeles?

By Harriet Zucker

Casa de los Ángeles, founded in 2000, is a free daycare and safe haven for the children of single mothers who come from the outskirts of town to work, to sell their wares at the mercado or clean houses in San Miguel. Before the center was established these children were often left at home alone, locked in the house. The Casa de los Ángeles family has evolved into a community center where mothers find the support they need to create a better life for their families. Besides childcare, these families receive medical attention, scholarship opportunities, transitional housing and a food bank, as relationships are formed that respect the dignity of each individual.

If you’re interested in supporting Casa de los Ángeles, as well as enjoying live music, delicious snacks, margaritas, tea, and a tour of the area’s largest collections of Mexican masks at a local bed and breakfast, Casa de la Cuesta, then this month’s benefit event is just for you!

This event will feature the acoustic music of Wade Ashley and Joan Elena Goldberg. Joan Elena Goldberg is a ceramic sculptress who has been living and teaching art to adults and children in San Miguel de Allende for 13 years. She is also a singer/songwriter. Wade Ashley has spent the past 25 years in San Miguel, working as a psychotherapist. He sings and plays the guitar, occasionally giving theatre performances. Together, Wade and Joan Elena will be performing their acoustic folk music at Casa de la Cuesta.

Our venue, the beautiful bed and breakfast Casa de la Cuesta, is owned by Heidi and Bill LeVasseur. Come sit in the spacious courtyard and enjoy the live music, free drinks and fresh food. You can also come and explore Bill’s collection of authentic Mexican masks in La Otra Cara de Mexico, the world-class mask museum that Bill curates himself! Don’t miss this lovely afternoon and great benefit for the children of Casa de los Ángeles!
