Casita Linda and C/D/R Real Estate join forces
By Jean Gerber
Just behind Mega, with its cases of exotic cheeses and racks of imported wines, Francisco and Remedios live in a one-room, 400-square-foot tin shack with their five children, ages 2 to 12. They have no electricity, no running water, and no bathroom.
Francisco earns less than US$10 a day as a construction worker. Remedios takes care of the house and the children, and picks through the trash to find items she can sell to make a few extra pesos.
Remedios loves her children with a passion. So when she discovered that someone was building a home for another Nuevo Pantoja family, she investigated.
When she learned that the builder was Casita Linda, the local charity that provides homes for families in extreme poverty, she applied to get a home of her own. She and Francisco went through three intensive interviews. And her dream came true when her family was picked to live in the 75th house that we have built since Casita Linda began in 2001.
At the same time that Remedios was reaching out to Casita Linda, Nancy Howze, managing partner of local real estate firm C/D/R, came to Casita Linda and said:
“At C/D/R we are selling luxury properties—in many cases second homes. Just a few miles from those properties are families that barely have a roof over their heads. We want to give back by donating money to Casita Linda for every house we help buy or sell.”
After the go-ahead from Casita Linda, Nancy met with the agents of C/D/R to propose that half of the money donated to Casita Linda would come from the company side, and half would come from the agent side. “I wanted to be sure that our agents were on board,” says Nancy. “Every single one was delighted to participate.”
And while both Remedios and Nancy were talking with Casita Linda, Anne Jones, top agent for C/D/R, was showing Centro property to a couple from California looking for a vacation home. Anne found her clients a house they loved just as Nancy solidified C/D/R’s partnership with Casita Linda.
So because of Anne’s sale, both C/D/R and Anne individually have donated money to build a home for Francisco, Remedios, and their family. “I feel really good about this,” says Anne, who has been selling real estate for 14 years. “After I met Remedios and her sweet children, I’m happy to give part of my commission to change their lives in such a major way.”
To cement C/D/R’s commitment to Casita Linda, Nancy has agreed to join its board of directors. “Casita Linda is a great organization and I am happy to help out,” says Nancy. “From now on, every time we buy or sell a house for one of our clients, we will help build a home for a family in need. I’m glad that C/D/R can give back to the town we all love, San Miguel, in such a tangible and appropriate way.”
