New mask exhibit at the toy museum
By Jade Arroyo
On Thursday, September 7, a very special exhibit was inaugurated at the toy museum “La Esquina” as part of the first Hummingbird Festival. The exhibition is made up of 19 masks decorated by renowned artists and another group of masks made by children artists supported by four different organizations (the Biblioteca Pública, CENCRE, Ojalá Niños and Casa Hogar Santa Julia).
The pieces all started out as simple cardboard masks in the shape of a hummingbird’s head, made by the artisan Jesús Aguilar, and from them the artists created unique pieces using different techniques and materials. Some of the participant artists were Carlos Ballestero, Wendy Coulen, Frank Gardner, Manuel Chacón, Susan Dorf, Delia Pérez, among many others.
This one-of-a-kind mask expo will remain open through September 22, and all the proceeds from the sale of masks will benefit the Audubon Society and El Charco del Ingenio. The pieces made by the children were raffle prizes at a gala dinner party.
The toy museum “La Esquina” is located at Núñez 40 and is open 10am– 5:30pm Wednesday through Saturday and 10am–2:30pm on Sunday.
