Pat Conroy, Yann Martel and Laura Esquivel to keynote February 2014 Writers’ Conference
By Susan Page
As you consider your winter beach vacation, plan to be in San Miguel de Allende from February 12 to 17, 2014, so you don’t miss a remarkable gathering of literary luminaries presenting addresses that are open to the public, and a literary festival that includes workshops, literary agent pitch sessions, a Broadway play about the women in Shakespeare’s plays, panel discussions, and our legendary Mexican fiesta. Registration for the Conference is now open. We encourage you to register early because the most popular workshops fill up quickly.
San Miguel International Writers’ Conference and Literary Festival
February 12 to 17, 2014
Registration Now Open
Featured keynote speakers for 2014 include Pat Conroy (The Prince of Tides), Yann Martel (Life of Pi) and Laura Esquivel (Like Water for Chocolate.) They, plus 48 other distinguished writers, will be in San Miguel as part of the 9th Annual San Miguel International Writers’ Conference and Literary Festival, an event for which people flock to San Miguel from all over Canada, the US and Mexico.
As “The Creative Crossroads of the Americas,” the conference is the largest of its kind in all of Latin America. It’s unusual among writers’ conferences because it is not for writers only, but is designed as a literary festival for readers and writers. The conference is fully bilingual, bringing Mexicans and “gringos” together in a rich cultural exchange. In addition to the above, the 2014 faculty includes Benjamin Alire Sáenz, winner of the 2103 PEN/Faulkner award for fiction; David Whyte, a much beloved poet with a devoted following; Kathi Diamant, entertaining presenter and world expert on Kafka; Ellen Bass, Pushcart Prize-winning poet; Juan Villoro, Mexican writer and journalist who was enthusiastically received at last year’s conference; Jorge Volpi, celebrated novelist and short story writer; and many more.
Special pricing for locals
The Conference Planning Committee has made it easy for local San Miguel residents to attend all or parts of the conference for reduced prices. A “Basic Conference” package is available that includes all nine of the keynote and general session addresses and panels, eight 90-minute workshops on a wide variety of topics for both writers and readers (choose from 56 options), optional individual consultations with seasoned professionals, and lunch every day, but does not include the reception; the Broadway play, Women of Will; pitch sessions with literary agents; this year’s new feature, a salsa dance party or the spectacular Mexican Fiesta. (That’s the one that Barbara Kingsolver called “. . . one of the ten best parties I have attended in my life, and I can’t remember the other nine!”)
For writers who want to obtain the maximum benefit from the conference, we have created a new package this year, which includes two four-hour intensive workshops, taught by exceptional teachers, on the last day of the conference. Dubbed “The Whole Enchilada,” this package offers a reduced price on the intensives.
“Early bard” prices that save US$100 end on October 1 and are available for all three packages: The Whole Enchilada, the Full Conference and the Basic Conference.
Single event tickets
If you don’t want to attend the entire conference, you may purchase tickets for single events. A reduced-price three-keynote-package is also available. Note that the 90-minute workshops for writers throughout the weekend will be available by single ticket purchase only after January 15, and only if they have not been filled by full conference attendees.
