Hospice@M/X–a Foodie Extravaganza to honor Howard Gleason

By Barbara Nicols

The perfect sunset, the perfect rooftop bar to kick off the event – and the perfect occasion: honoring San Miguel’s Howard Gleason for his decade plus of dedication and service to such charities as Feed the Hungry. Hosted and organized by Hospice San Miguel, Hospice@M/X was the second Hospice@ culinary event – an ongoing series featuring fine dining at exclusive eateries around town. Hospice@M/X sold out in 48 hours and over 100 people signed up to sample Chef David Jahnke’s sophisticated menu, featuring such sublime creations as Mesquite-Smoked Tuna Steak with Purée of Sweet Potatoes and Tequila-infused Asparagus and BBQ Beef Ribs with a Maguey Salsa. These Hospice@ culinary events are made for serious foodies…Where else could you be served a custom five-course tasting menu for only 500 pesos and know you are supporting the community?

M/X owners Paola Quintero and Arturo Regalado Jimenez generously donated a portion of the proceeds from both dinner and beverage sales, as well as a raffle prize of dinner for two. Other prizes included a case of wine and a gift certificate for Piedras Jewelry, designed by long-time Hospice supporter Bill Harris. Piedras also donated 15 percent of August jewelry sales to Hospice – and this is the exactly the kind of support and involvement that honoree Howard Gleason says “gives a person a feeling of belonging to the community.”

And he should know – for six years, Howard has led the rally for Feed the Hungry, an organization founded in 1984, which has grown to provide over 800,000 meals to school children in the San Miguel de Allende area annually. He says that “time is the most important thing a person can give” and the spirit of volunteering in this community “makes San Miguel the most wonderful place in the world to live.”

Linda Moss of Agave/Sotheby’s International, who joined five other brokers (including Wesley Gleason, Howard’s son) to attend the soiree, agrees with Howard’s assessment. Said Linda, “This is just one of many reasons why I love living in San Miguel de Allende. It is always a win-win situation when one of our most dedicated citizens, Howard Gleason, can be honored for his six years of service to Feed the Hungry — and at the same time help raise money for Hospice SMA, which is such an important institution in our community.”

Hospice SMA offers compassionate and expert end of life care to all, regardless of ability to pay, and depends on the financial support of the community to do this. Howard Haynes, a great friend to Hospice SMA, sums it up, “Our Hospice was the first in all of Mexico. Families can now face this life event and know that it is not a lonely road. There are qualified people to provide medical and emotional support.”

As Piedras’ Bill Harris noted, while he surveyed the sold-out crowd sipping margaritas on the roof before dinner, “Hospice is something we will all need, eventually.” And with the continued support of the magnificent San Miguel Community – Hospice will be able to honor those needs.

Both Hospice@ events sold out in record time – the first in 24 hours, the second in 48 – so you need to act fast when the next one is announced! Email hospice.sma@gmail.com to be notified of the third Hospice@ culinary extravaganza.
