For the healthy traveller
By Jade Arroyo
For those who seek a healthy and lighter lifestyle (eating, drinking, conscience), we present some fun and tasty choices for you to enjoy the good life in San Miguel de Allende.
Organic Market TOSMA
This market is held only on Saturdays from 8:30am to 2pm at the corner of Ancha de San Antonio and Cardo. It is one of the most energetic and lively places in town, filled with locals and visitors meeting and greeting while they do their healthy shopping of organic vegetables and artisanal products such as cheese, bread, honey, beauty products or even jewelry or hand-crafted incense. You must come to the Organic Market to grab a bite. Under the shady protection of trees, there are long tables and chairs to sit and enjoy a rancho-style meal: vegan tamales, handmade gorditas, quesadillas with homemade stuffing and organic coffee and fruit juices.
Ablu, Cuna de Allende 15a
This is a heavenly shop, where you feel completely seduced by the fragrant aromas of the beauty and bath products, such as shower gel, soaps, hair care, candles, oils and moisturizing lotions. All of the products contain the finest ingredients locally harvested, and, wherever possible, organic ingredients as well. Pay a visit to Ablu located just a few steps away from the Jardin and treat yourself. They also offer gift baskets to give to your loved ones.
Charco del Ingenio,
El Charco is San Miguel’s very own natural reserve and botanical garden. It has a grand beauty, including an impressive waterfall in the rainy season, and features a large collection of Mexican plants, particularly cacti, and an island-filled reservoir which is a refuge for birds and wild life. This reserve is also a space for ancient indigenous traditions and those who are in touch with Mother Earth, such as monthly full moon ceremonies, temazcal or Aztec dancing. Charco del Ingenio is located 10 minutes away from the centro, on the way towards Querétaro (you can take a taxi for 30-35 pesos). For further information visit elcharco.org.
Néctar, Correo at Chiquitos
Nectar is a charming and elegant tea house; it also offers hand-crafted ice-cream and sorbets (absolutely delicious!). The ice creams and sorbets come in natural fruit and tea flavors. They also serve excellent coffee and an amazing selection of teas and infusions. Give it a try, you won’t regret it.
