Mujeres en Cambio gets a taste of funding!
By Gregory Gunter
When the San Miguel Community Foundation (SMCF) was named the beneficiary of the recent La Vida del Vino Wine Tasting fundraiser and open house—managed by Coldwell Banker SMART and Your Dream Team Realtors Greg Gunter & Ivy del Pozzo—SMCF President Donna Foudray was uncertain who would benefit from the funds.
You see, SMCF disburses funds based upon grant requests submitted by nonprofit organizations, or by special directed-donation requests submitted by donors. It wasn’t until the post-fundraiser donation date that the donor team made their directed-donation choice: Mujeres en Cambio.
“We were thrilled to learn about the grant,” said Mujeres en Cambio President Kathy Devine. “Because 98 percent of donated funds go directly to scholarships, this donation can prove life-changing for the young women who receive them.”
In 1995, Mujeres en Cambio began with seven students. They have now provided educational scholarships to 150 young women, with a focus on the rural communities of San Miguel. In addition, they manage The Rug Hook Project, a women’s craft cooperative spurred along by artist Charlotte Bell, who learned about the women from the village of Agustin Gonzales in 1999.
“As a textile fan, I’m enchanted by The Rug Hook Project,” says Ivy del Pozzo, the redhead half of Your Dream Team Realtors with CB SMART. “Greg and I endorse a Pay It Forward policy in our career, and we’re really pleased to see Mujeres en Cambio receive SMCF’s directed donation—it will affect several generations of women.”
The event generating this directed donation began what the mayor of San Miguel has now proclaimed as Wine Month, prompting several wine-related events around the region. The Coldwell Banker SMART Wine Tasting event at Casa Magdalena, pictured above—if you missed the event, see it on YouTube—directed all funds raised from over 140 attendees to SMCF.
