ART 2 WEAR in San Miguel de Allende
by India Bastien
This past weekend Art 2 Wear festival took over the Jardin with non-stop runway shows, a mini – fashion market on Cuna de Allende, shops gave discounts, others gave wine and appetizers. Men and women were swooping in and out of the parties and the runway shows dressed in their best outfits. We even walked in high heels at the inaguration Side Walk Catwalk with mojigangas and music up and down the San Miguel streets. Local favorite celeb Spencer Tunik inaugurated Cecile Russels manikin in front of Angela Peralta and Cultural ambassador Klaudia Oliver inaugurated the students work of UDL (Universidad de Leon) with grace and poise. Mexican actor Erik Hyser presided the opening of Lidia Lavins beautiful manikin in front of Bellas Artes, and then we finished the SideWalk Catwalk with a dress from UMA by Sami that glistened in the sun, making the audience gasp.
Art 2 Wear team of volunteers joined forces with the government of San Miguel de Allende; after months of planning and months of gathering designers, shops, models, hairdressers, make up artists, Dj’s, and enthusiasts the first runway show was launched in the Jardin with Maika de La O as the designer of her two shops: Petra and Love Never Fails. Her high end models stomped down the runway at full blast with her fall collection.
The next day the mini Fashion Market was set up on Cuna de Allende flanked by Kate McKennas silk flags waving in the hot sun. The Graffiti artists Boggart Clan started their Fashion mural in the Parque Juarez.
By 5pm, despite the sun, we started the second round of runway shows.
We opened with a very young designer from Monterrey, Atros Arriaga. The sun glistened on the jewelry that the models wore. In the middle of the collection, the music stopped. With a quick improvisation mariachis took over the stage.
Once the sun hid behind the building, our favorite local designers took over the stage, Cock of the Walk boots mixed with Apashanka’s dresses. The seats filled up and the Jardin benches were no longer visible because of the crowd they gathered. A last minute decision was taken and all the afternoon designers repeat their show since the lights are more exciting –and that way those who did not want to come because of the sun, got a chance to see it. The second round of runway shows thumped and pumped into the night.
By Sunday, exhausted, frazzled yet excited, the Art 2 Wear team set off at 10:00am to get the last day of runway shows to the catwalk. The theme for Sunday was “Recycled”. The event started with UDL (Universidad de Leon) student runway show “Fashion Garbage.”
Art 2 Wear awaits more designers, night-only fashion shows to avoid the hot sun, a bigger fashion market and more exciting projects for next year. The Art 2 Wear team wishes to thank all those who participated. We await for a bigger festival next year!
