Misty water-colored memories; popcorn, too!
By Gregory Gunter
Barbara Streisand didn’t actually visit San Miguel de Allende, but her lyrics seemed apropos for the Birthday Benefit Bash held at Maggie’s Farm in Jalpa for Refugio de los Recuerdos, a haven and retreat serving to celebrate the memories of women who have come to San Miguel from all over the world, bringing their talents, their hearts, and a keen interest in the rights of women. Tom Frazee—who oversaw the production of the stained glass windows at the chapel at the Refugio—proved Man of the Hour as the celebrated birthday boy.
Those stained glass windows were actually produced—under Tom’s guidance—by the children of Ojalá Niños who celebrated their tireless roster of volunteers, soon to be profiled in visual culture documentarian Catherine Howard’s international film, the 13/13/13 Sketchbook Project. But the strays of San Miguel—those cats and dogs we all love—were also feted at the grand inauguration of Ross Macdonald’s Poppy’s Casa de Popcorn as a benefit for the SPA. Keep popping, Ross—we love those memories of that coconut and pecan popcorn!
