Our august pets of the month have tales to tell!
By Lynn Weisberg and Joan DiPiero
The arrivals of cats Jackson and Winky at the SPA were far from typical. As she was leaving her house, our director, Lynn Weisberg, was shocked to discover a street cat, covered in an oily substance, completely devoid of fur except for a bushy tail and a few tufts on his head. Fearless, this young male approached Lynn for salvation. She, of course, swooped him up, named him Jackson, and brought him to our vet who concluded he was very skinny and unadoptable. Fortunately, we found a foster home for Jackson. Now he is as good as new, a picture of self-confidence, ready to be adopted.
Our adoptions coordinator, Sandra, arrived for her job interview with us by announcing there was a cat in the window grill outside; turns out the cat was in terrible condition, apparently the victim of a dog attack that left one of her eyes badly injured and infected. As we were wondering how to free her, Sandra reached in and plucked the cat into her arms. Winky was operated on the next day to treat the wound. Emaciated, she took weeks to recover, but remained cheerful throughout her ordeal. About one year old, she is one of our sweetest cats, despite her past sad history.
Frida and her daughter, Cristal, are two lovely dogs who have been at the SPA since January, 2012. They had been living with two other dogs on the side of the highway between Los Frailes and Mega and were being fed by an SPA cat volunteer. Thanks to a nearby barbacoa stand, they had shelter, but when the owners moved, the dogs were left unprotected. Amazingly wonderful, friendly, loving animals, two of the four were adopted fairly quickly. Frida and Cristal remain, maybe because we want them adopted together – it would break Frida’s heart if they were separated. Devoted to each other, they are the most gentle, loving, delightful dogs imaginable. Frida, about eight and a half, has the energy of a much younger dog, while Cristal, only two and a half, has an “old soul.” They like to play with each other and then settle down for a good belly rub. One person can easily walk them on leashes together. They would be joyful family pets.
