Free laparoscopic gallstone surgeries

By Antonio De Jesús Aguado

Individuals and businesses are teaming up to donate 50 laparoscopic surgeries for sanmiguelenses; the call for patients is open until August 12.

From August 12 through 14, doctors from Hospital Ángeles del Peregal will visit San Miguel de Allende to perform 50 laparoscopic surgeries on patients who have gallstones. Federal legislator Ricardo Villarreal commented that this is a joint effort made possible by the General Hospital, hotels, restaurants, some residents and himself. In a hospital such as Ángeles del Pedregal the surgery would cost up to 50,000 pesos. According to Villarreal, currently 30 patients have been confirmed, but there is still room for 20 more.

The surgeries will be performed at the General Hospital in two operating rooms with 10 medical personnel each; among them will be Dr. Mauricio Rodríguez, a laparoscopic surgeon, who said that the procedure will be performed on those who have a serious gallstone problem and acute pain. Patients heal from this kind of surgery quickly, he said.

Anesthesiologist José de Jesús Alarcón, who will assist in the surgeries, commented that the service is for low-income patients who cannot afford this surgery. Potential candidates will be screened and diagnosed at the General Hospital.
