Audubon summer outing to Jalpa!

By Carole Schor

Audubon de Mexico is celebrating its 46th anniversary in San Miguel de Allende with the launching of our new day-trip program — Audubon Outings. Like our popular Audubon EcoJourneys’ multi-day tours, our one-day Audubon Outings will explore the rich nature and culture of Mexico, visiting intriguing destinations located near San Miguel. On Sunday, August 11, we’ll be heading to the community of Jalpa, situated in a mountain-rimmed fertile valley just 25 minutes from town.

Hacienda la Purisima de Jalpa

The day’s activities will center around a gourmet comida at the beautiful Hacienda La Purisima de Jalpa, prepared by Purisima’s talented chefs. Many of the ingredients will come from Purisima’s organic garden. Pianist and Wyndham Hill recording artist Mark Darnell will provide music.

After lunch, owner Janet Onnen will share her stories about the fascinating history and meticulous restoration of this early 18th-century hacienda, followed by a tour of the grounds and buildings now operating as a boutique hotel and working farm.

Optional Morning Activities

The summer rains have filled Jalpa’s lake and streams and turned the hillsides lush and green, making it a perfect location for two optional activities before the hacienda event:

A nature walk in the Valle de Jalpa to see birds, butterflies and the explosion of rainy season flowers. The walk will be led by our Audubon naturalists; Kayaking on the Presa de Jalpa to enjoy the quiet beauty of the lake and view the egrets, pelicans, ducks, loons, herons and shoreline birds. A limited supply of kayaks is available for rent.

Join us on Sunday, August 11, for a great day experiencing the pleasures of our bountiful region and help support Audubon’s Environmental Grant program, which invests in projects that restore and conserve the precious and fragile nature and natural resources of San Miguel.

Advance reservations are required. Audubon will coordinate ride shares.

Register for this event at La Conexion, calle Aldama, Monday-Saturday, or at the Kate McKenna Boutique at Cuna de Allende 15, Thursday-Saturday 1-7pm. Sunday, noon-4pm. For more information, contact Gordon Fulton at
