Jorge & Brownie: a Facebook miracle
By Megan Gabel
David and Harry, regular SPA volunteer dog walkers, were in a field with two of our larger dogs when a little brown puppy started following them. Fearless, she approached them, eager to make friends. Both men’s hearts went out to this sweet, adorable, friendly puppy. After trying to find if she had a home, afraid for her safety, one man stayed with her while the other one went to ask Lynn Weisberg, the SPA dog advocate, if the puppy could be admitted. Fortunately, the answer was yes and we immediately named her Brownie.
Routinely, new dogs are put in isolation, so there Brownie went – not at all what she had in mind. She wanted love and attention, not isolation. Saturday morning, a few days later, pronounced healthy, Brownie became official. We took her picture, did a video, and that evening I posted her in our Facebook album of dogs available for adoption.
Within minutes, I received an email in Spanish (thank goodness for Google Translate), asking about Brownie. “What do I need to adopt her?” “Love, 350 pesos, and answer a few questions,” I responded. “I have all that!” was the immediate reply. “I love her,” he added for emphasis. “When may I come to get her?” “Monday, between 11 and 2.” “But what if someone adopts her before then?” “Impossible,” I said, “We’re closed and we won’t have any adoptions until Monday at 11am.” “Okay. I’ll be there!”
At 9:30 Monday morning, an eager and smiling Jorge Ramírez García showed up to meet his Brownie. He was asked to come back at 11am. At 11, grinning from ear to ear, he finally met the puppy he fell in love with on Facebook. He tenderly and lovingly held her and proclaimed she was the one for him. A short time later, Brownie, the orphan straggler from the street, was off to her new home. Jorge wasn’t the only one smiling at this happy ending. We all were.
All our animals are featured on our website (www.spasanmiguel.org) and in our albums at www.facebook.com/spasanmiguel (biographies, pictures, and videos).
