Dr. Lupe Rivera Marin is a lawyer and politician whose career included nine years representing the State of Guanajuato, first as congresswoman and then as senator. She served as the Mexican Ambassador to Italy and she is the longstanding Director of the National Institute for Historical Studies on the Mexican Revolution.
An accomplished writer and lecturer, Lupe Rivera is the author of three books. As a child, she spent memorable times in the kitchen of her stepmother, Frida Kahlo, an experience that led her to write a gorgeous bestselling cookbook, Frida’s Fiestas. In her intimate portrait of her father, My Papa Diego and Me, she tells stories that are tender, funny and unexpected, bringing to life the world-renowned artist who just happened to be her father. This book also contains rare family photos and 14 high-quality reproductions of her father’s works. Her book, Diego Rivera the Red is a colorful recreation of her father’s childhood and early adulthood that reveals the ideological and artistic development of the famous revolutionary painter.
San Miguel residents and visitors will have a rare opportunity to meet and celebrate Lupe Rivera Marin at three events. On Saturday, August 17, from 4 to 6pm, we will welcome her at a gala reception to be held at an elegant home in Centro. The home is within easy walking distance to the Teatro Ángela Peralta, for those who have tickets to the Chamber Music Festival concert that evening at 7pm.
The Frida’s Fiesta Dinner on Saturday, August 18 at 6pm, will feature cuisine from Rivera Marin’s eponymous cookbook. The lavishly illustrated cookbook will be available for purchase that evening, and Rivera Marin will sign books, only for dinner guests. After dinner, she will share anecdotes about life with her famous father. Commemorative posters will be available at the dinner, to be held at a private rooftop dining room in Centro.
Life as a Federal Senator
On Monday night at 6pm, Dr. Rivera Marin will present a lecture in the Real de Minas Hotel ballroom, entitled “My Years as the Federal Senator for the State of Guanajuato.” All of the events are bilingual, as simultaneous translation will be provided.
The San Miguel International Writers’ Conference, for which the Frida’s Fiestas Weekend is a benefit, will present its Ninth Annual Conference February 12 to 17, 2014. The exciting lineup of keynote speakers for that event includes Pat Conroy (Prince of Tides, The Great Santini); Yann Martel (Life of Pi); Laura Esquivel (Like Water for Chocolate); Benjamin Sáenz (PEN/Faulkner Prize winner for 2013); David Whyte (Pilgrim; Crossing the Unknown Sea); Kathi Diamant (Kafka’s Last Love: The Mystery of Dora Diamant), and Ellen Bass (The Human Line; The Courage to Heal).
Tickets for the benefit weekend are priced as follows: The reception from 4 to 6pm on Saturday: US$40/520 pesos. The Frida’s Fiestas Dinner on Saturday at 6pm: US$80 /1,000 pesos. The lecture on Monday at 6pm at Real de Minas: US$25/325 pesos.
A Patron Package for all three events saves US$20 off individual event tickets and includes the reception, the dinner, the book signing, and priority seating at the lecture for US$125/1,600 pesos. Tickets for the reception, the dinner, and the package are limited to the first 75 guests who purchase tickets.
