How about sponsoring a casita?

By Lynn Weisberg

We are now halfway through the year and it’s been a busy six months for the SPA. We are well on the way to exceeding last year’s cat and dog adoptions (108 and 114, respectively). When animals are adopted, we can take in more animals and care for them until they find permanent homes. A no-kill shelter, the SPA houses around 100 animals. Providing for their food, care, and shelter is costly. The casita program is a way to underwrite some of those costs and help the SPA continue its work.

One of our goals for 2013 is to have every dog and cat “casita” supported by a “sponsor.” “Casita” is a fancy name for our animal’s residence at the SPA. For the mere cost of US$1 per day, our furry friends will benefit and you will be rewarded by the knowledge that your sponsorship is helping to support these homeless pets until they are adopted.

Here’s how it works. If you would like to sponsor a casita, simply go to our website ( and click on “How To Help” at the top. Then choose “Support Our Fundraisers.” Scroll down on that page to “Sponsor a Doggy/Kitty Casita.” For 12 monthly payments, choose your casita type and click on “Subscribe.” For an annual payment, scroll a little further down, select the casita type, and choose “Buy Now.” Payment can be also made in cash or peso equivalent (360 pesos per month/4,320 pesos per year) at the Jardín (Thursdays from 11am-1pm) or at the SPA office, Monday-Saturday, from 9am-3pm.

A fun aspect of this program is that we commemorate your annual contribution with a personally inscribed Big Bone Designer Plaque or a Big Fish Designer Plaque mounted on a dog’s “casita” or the cattery, respectively. Some people have their own names inscribed or choose inscriptions to honor their children, pets, or friends. The plaques are beautiful, unique and very snazzy!

We so appreciate what our wonderful supporters do for us all year long. A 100 percent casita sponsorship will go a long way in helping us provide for our resident animals. If you need help signing up or have any questions about the casita program, please email us at Thank you in advance for your generous support.
