Gastronomy and inspiration attract visitors

Events such as San Miguel Gourmet have attracted more tourists to the city on the weekends. The First International Gastronomy Festival Guanajuato ¡Sí Sabe! in San Miguel offered 17 simultaneous events in the most heavily touristed cities in Guanajuato (León, Celaya, Guanajuato, Silao and San Miguel). Some of the events held in the municipality were “Five chefs, five courses, five hours” at Casa de Aves, on June 1, as well as the Third Annual Lamb and Mezcal Festival at Casa de Sierra Nevada, and Restaurants with Stars à la Carte held at The Restaurant, Rosewood and Casa de Aves.

In the city all the gastronomic events happening during May and June were part of San Miguel Gourmet, a festival during which local restaurants and associations from other states presented the best of their culinary art. Although events such as “Five chefs, five courses, five hours” and the Third Annual Lamb and Mezcal Festival were included in Guanajuato ¡Sí Sabe!, they were also part of San Miguel Gourmet, as well as “Spanish Stars Shining Under San Miguel’s Sky,” which featured local cooks and dishes.

María José Garrido, director of Economic Development, Tourism and International Affairs, commented that Sabores de San Miguel (Flavors of San Miguel), held from June 14 to 16, attracted more than 16,000 visitors and the gross revenue was 500,000 pesos from food sales. Including hotel charges, the total gross revenue was 2.5 million pesos. San Miguel Gourmet, according to Garrido, generated a gross revenue of more than 7 million pesos.

Garrido acknowledged that all these events had taken place before in the city, but that the 2012–2015 administration worked to organize them.

On July 1, the administration will launch the festival “San Miguel Inspires,” which will bring together many of the events that traditionally take place here during the summer to attract more tourists to the city and encourage them to spend more time here. The local administration expects to achieve a hotel occupancy rate of 51 percent on weekdays and of 91 percent on weekends. The program for the event will be released in the days to come.
