Celebrate San Miguel’s amazing women on June 29

By Nora Diehl

You are invited: Come and be a part of establishing a unique contemplative refuge and archive on Saturday, June 29, from noon to 6pm. El Refugio de los Recuerdos is a work of art you can walk through! Inspired by the Little Chapel of Guernsey (google it – it’s amazing) this tribute to women will also be decorated inside and out with mosaics made of bits of china, pottery, glass and mementos. In many families, a broken dinner plate or china cup is put away and kept because it holds dear memories; at the Refugio, it can become part of a visual demonstration of how love conquers all.

El Refugio will not only be a place of memories. Its Archives, a collection of the stories of San Miguel’s amazing women, will be a source of inspiration. Help us write down the histories of women who broke the mold and made San Miguel their home, often in the face of significant obstacles. We all have stories to contribute, and each one is a valuable facet of this valuable history.

The Refugio is honoring three women at this inaugural event: Katherine de la Fosse Walch (Katy) whose adventurous life inspired the building of the Refugio; Georgeanne Johnson, activist and founder of Mujeres en Cambio; and our beloved Doctora Alma (Doctora Alma Ruth Miranda Valezuela) whose lifelong generosity to animals and humans constitutes virtual sainthood.

Please plan to come and bring a photo and the story of a woman dear to you. We will lift these up on our Wall of Inspiration. Please see for pictures and to learn more. If you can’t come on the 29th and you’d like to have a memento included in the Refugio, we invite you to be in contact through the website. You can also submit a story through the website. We’d love to have you involved in whatever manner you wish.

Always a champion of San Miguel’s women, Tom Frazee has graciously consented to celebrate his birthday at “Maggie’s Farm,” the site of the Refugio, located about five minutes off the road to Queretaro on Saturday, June 29, from noon until 6pm. See map in the ad, or see Free admission! Delicious tacos by Matilde and plenty of cold beer. Bring a bottle and the set-ups are free. Don’t forget hats and sunscreen. Please, no dogs.
