The Corn’s A-Poppin’
By Lynn Weisberg
We really do mean what the title says! The corn will be popping away at Poppy’s Casa de Popcorn, San Miguel de Allende’s first gourmet popcorn store, scheduled to open to the public on June 30. The Grand Opening Party has generously been offered as a fundraiser for two of the local animal groups; the SPA and Amigos de Animales! Savory gourmet popcorn in several different flavors and kettle corn will be available. All of the corn used is organic. In addition to its permanent location, Poppy’s will have a popcorn cart at the Organic Market on Saturdays.

The fundraiser/grand opening party will be held on June 29 starting at 6:30pm in their charming location at Ancha de San Antonio 9. Save the date!
We are very grateful to Karen Sweetland, the genius behind this concept, for offering us the proceeds of this event, and we hope to see many of the supporters of the animal groups at the party. There will be a buffet dinner, dancing, entertainment, raffles, an auction, and, of course, popcorn!
Now, some folks may be wondering if popcorn is okay for cats and dogs. The answer is, not really. Plain, unbuttered, unflavored popcorn may be okay in very small quantities on rare occasions, but there are risks. The indigestible part of the kernel may irritate your pet’s stomach, and pieces of popcorn can become lodged in the throat, especially with small breeds. If inhaled, popcorn can cause respiratory difficulties, so it’s not the best animal treat. But, for humans? Healthy! Just don’t load up on too much butter, salt or chocolate, and you can tell yourself this low-cal snack is health food.
Be on the lookout for more information on this event from Karen, herself. Tickets (275 pesos) will be available at La Conexion, the Longhorn, and at the SPA. Sierra, Thunder, Alice, and Louie are just a few of our animals who will benefit from your ticket purchase. Check out www.spasanmiguel.org and www.facebook.com/spasanmiguel for albums of all our cats and dogs available for adoption (biographies, pictures, and videos). Stop by the Jardin on Thursdays from 11am-1pm to meet some of our available pets, purchase SPA items, donate, join or renew your membership. Adoptions are 350 pesos which includes vaccinations, deworming, and spaying/neutering,
We hope you will take the time to enjoy a fun evening, try out different flavors of popcorn, and support your town’s animal rescue groups.
