Crime in the city has decreased

By Antonio De Jesús Aguado

In order to cut down on crime in the municipality, in February of this year the local government purchased 28 new patrol vehicles. Now, four months later, the head of the Public Security Department, Gabriel Arturo Yáñez Saldaña, reports that crime has decreased slightly.

Yáñez commented that what they have been doing is maintaining or decreasing the rates of some types of crimes, such as home burglaries. He said that the crime index decreased 30 percent in April, thanks to patrols with the new vehicles in addition to the strategies adopted by residents. Although in May the number of burglaries was up again, it did not surpass the 30 percent decrease seen in April. Saldaña commented that these crimes occur because houses are uninhabited most of the time or because they do not have any kind of security.

Theft of vehicles or their contents is another of the most common felonies, because most of the stolen articles can be sold. Although the director said that there are many variations of this type of crime, and he cannot give an exact figure because usually the thefts are not reported, this kind of vandalism has decreased 20 percent from February to May. The director warned the public that a gang of thieves driving a grey Windstar has been robbing vehicles and they are trying their best to apprehend them. Yáñez also commented that they started a program to prevent the theft of motorcycles and the number of thefts has decreased. He noted that in the last month police prevented the theft of three motorcycles and arrested the criminals.

Although the director did not give a precise figure, he said that the number of street fights has been low, but that an increase or decrease always depends on the number of festivities held in the city and the uncontrolled consumption of alcohol. A recent scam targeting high-school students has been reported. The young victims are asked to deliver a package somewhere, leaving their belongings with the scammers as assurance they will make the delivery and return. When they come back to retrieve their possessions, the crooks are long gone.  The Public Security Department has started a campaign to warn students about this fraud.
