Second SMART Festival showcases contemporary art
By Jade Arroyo
The second edition of the multidisciplinary arts festival SMART will be celebrated from May 31 through June 2. SMART is, above all, about contemporary art, showcasing exhibits by some of the country’s best-known artists. The agenda includes exhibits by noted contemporary artists, a DJ dance party, a tequila tasting, cocktail parties, hot air balloon rides, private tours and more.
One of the highlights will be a dance party with music by DJ Naz at Hotel Matilda. Naz is one of the most prolific DJs on the international scene, playing worldwide. He is the resident DJ at London’s famed Buddha Bar.
Four galleries from Mexico City will feature their top contemporary artists. Galería Hilario Galguera will exhibit pieces by Bosco Sodi, who is acclaimed for his large installations, including his vivid Blue Pangaea, in Hotel Matilda. Ricardo Reyes Arte will feature works by Victor Rodriguez, who has received awards for his hyperrealistic works.
Luis Adelantado Mexico will present work by seven artists, including Anthony Goicolea, Óscar Carrasco, Morten Slettemeas, Luis Rodrigo, Martín Nuñez, Omera Leyva and Félix Luna. Artwork by Carolina Ponte, Pedro Varela and Mauro Piva will be on display courtesy of Galería Enrique Guerrero.
Spencer Tunick will exhibit his latest works as well as launch the Mexican premiere of his new book, European Installations. Tunick is celebrated for his photos of large groups of nudes, and one of his most famous photos, of 18,000 nudes in Mexico City’s Zócalo, hangs in Hotel Matilda.
The director of Hotel Matilda, Bruce James, said: “SMART is a high-energy, of-the-moment alternative to the traditional Old World festivals of San Miguel. We tap into the scene and vibe of today with an exotic mix of experiences, from striking contemporary art exhibits to parties and tequila tastings. This will be our second annual SMART, and it promises to be even better than last year’s.”
At Casa Dragones, a special Casa Dragones tequila will be launched. This tequila brand often supports museums, galleries and artist around the world, including artist Gabriel Orozco. In honor of his retrospective tour, which was held in four leading museums during 2010 and 2011, including New York’s MoMA and London’s Tate Modern, Orozco collaborated with Casa Dragones to create a special-edition bottle. The bottles are engraved with Orozco’s iconic 1997 “Black Kites.” The event will combine professional tequila tasting with a presentation of the art and influence of Orozco and Mexico’s most eminent contemporary artists. The presentation will be given by independent curator Pedro Alonso.
