What your donation achieves

By Chuck Rubin

As the Vice President of Patronato Pro Niños, I am often asked: What does my donation buy? Who gets the benefit from the money I give? Both are valid questions.

Sure, we can say we treated more than 11,000 kids in 2012; 9,000 for essential and preventative dental care and 3,000 for medical issues ranging from colds to kidney disease. And while those numbers are impressive, they don’t actually give you the sense of what each dollar or peso can achieve.

For example, let’s say that you attended our Golden Elephant Sale last year (which we’ll be repeating on July 6 this year) and you bought something wonderful for 600 pesos. Well, those 600 pesos would pay for 10 visits to a physical therapist: treatment to help a child walk more upright or strengthen leg muscles so that he or she can walk better, play soccer or ride a bicycle.

If you attended our Noche en Monte Carlo Gala in March and reserved a table for an extra US$100, that donation would pay for 10 visits to a dermatologist or an ophthalmologist. Can you imagine the increase in a young person’s self-esteem that comes from a successful treatment for a disfiguring skin ailment? Or imagine a child who had failing grades in school, not because he or she lacked the motivation or the intelligence to succeed but because they couldn’t see what was written on the board. Your US$100 would have helped 10 kids better see what the teacher had written. And who knows, some of them could then go on to become doctors, lawyers or teachers themselves!

Or let’s say you and a friend went on one of our Historic Walking Tours of Centro. The total of your two 150-peso donations would pay for a child to see a doctor at Patronato Pro Niños’ full medical clinic.

So the next time someone asks you what your donation to Patronatos Pro Niños paid for, tell them you helped one kid become a soccer star, another graduate as a lawyer, and a third saw a doctor for a bad cold and got a bottle of cough medicine and had a peaceful night’s sleep.

If this story has inspired you with how effective your gifts can be, you can make a donation to Patronato Pro Niños right now, just by calling 152-7796 and letting Lily know that you are ready and willing to help one of San Miguel’s children lead a healthy, happy life! Or, if you prefer, you can visit our website at and make your donation there!
