Honoring Oscar–the SPA Remembrance Tree
By Suzy Tatum
Two years ago, I lost my big old fuzzy gray cat named Oscar. He had been sick for many months and I hoped he could be saved. Finally, the vet said that it was time and he had to be put to sleep. It was a very tearful ending to a wonderful loving friendship that lasted for years.
Oscar was a real charmer who followed me around like a puppy, “talked” to me incessantly, and was always at the front gate to greet me when I drove in. How I treasured that – a greeting committee of one! When he was gone, I missed him so much and thought of him often. I wished there was something I could do to commemorate him and to let others know that he was such a wonderful pet. It occurred to me that maybe others felt the same way about the loss of their own beloved pet. From this experience, I came up with the idea of the Remembrance Tree.
This idea has now come to fruition. The Remembrance Tree now exists in a prominent position at the inside entrance to the SPA. It is a permanent, beautiful and impressive eight-foot copper-colored structure with branches containing leaves for honoring a departed pet. I purchased the first leaf and had it inscribed with Oscar’s and my name. It gives me so much pleasure to know that I am preserving the memory of Oscar by honoring him in this way.
A leaf can be purchased in loving memory of a beloved pet that has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. Volunteer Jane Dill of Jane Dill Design will inscribe on a copper-colored leaf the pet’s name, the owner’s name, and a personal message, if desired. The one-time cost of each leaf is US$200 (or peso equivalent). The proceeds will be applied to our future project to improve our clinic facilities.
