What is Atención San Miguel?

Atención is the oldest bilingual newspaper in San Miguel de Allende. It first appeared in 1975 as a bulletin put out by La Biblioteca and through the years has grown to become what it is today: an objective, welcoming newspaper with the best local tourist guide, a platform for relaying information on social, artistic and culture happenings, and a source of news for the foreign community, residents, visitors and a growing number of Mexican readers. The mission of Atención is to inform, educate and entertain, and its income supports La Biblioteca’s scholarship programs for youths and free courses for children.

Atención’s staff is highly professional in all areas: editorial, design, sales, computing and administration, so I want to thank them all (nine besides myself and the English-speaking volunteers who help with the English revisions) for their continuing dedication and enthusiasm, week after week, in order to produce a quality product.

All the news pieces and articles written by Atención reporters include a thorough investigation and everyone involved in the issues is interviewed. It is our editorial policy to offer a forum to all the voices related to a particular event. We recently received some criticism regarding the way we have reported events related to public safety that have arisen in recent months in the city, and we have been accused of omitting , changing, hiding or softening the information about these events . I want to clarify that we have never engaged in these actions. We have reported all these unfortunate events that affect the prestige and stability of our beloved San Miguel, in a timely manner. In San Miguel criminal acts have indeed occurred, as in every city in the world, and Atención has informed readers about them and will continue doing so, if and when they happen again. Our policy is simply not to engage in descriptive details that might make Atención become a tabloid or sensationalist newspaper and cause unfounded and unnecessary alarm among our readers. We want Atención to remain an objective and friendly newspaper that promotes the culture and traditions of our San Miguel.
