Shoes that made a statement

By Jade Arroyo

“Art & Soles” was a very fun fund-raising event on the theme of women’s footwear. This iconic item of apparel, the focus of many designers and shoppers, was taken to a different level at this exhibition/auction. Thirty artists participated to express their commitment to women’s rights by creating pieces using a range of artistic media, from paintings and drawings to large, profusely embellished art objects (such as the chair made by Beverly Moor). The event was held at the gallery Espacio Carral, inside the art and design center Fábrica La Aurora. The general vibe was quiet eclectic, and the party-goers wore colorful outfits and unique jewelry, laughed, had a margarita or two and generally enjoyed supporting a great cause through art. The money raised, 111,250 pesos, will benefit CASA’s anti-violence programs. The piece that fetched the highest price was a painting by Toller Cranston titled “Strawberry Shoes Forever.”
