Founded in 2010, CAF was launched with a city-wide art contest for children between the ages of 5 and 12. Local schools, public and private, were invited to participate. This initial project resulted in an annual city-wide contest with some 800 paintings submitted for review and evaluation by qualified judges. First, second and third place winners were announced and awards granted during an awards presentation at the prestigious Teatro Angela Peralta. It was truly an outstanding success and an inspiration for all children who attended.
To celebrate the work of these children, the Children’s Art Foundation of San Miguel publishes a book, Creative Children of San Miguel, to illustrate the talents of those who participate in the annual art project. A beautiful book containing a selection of 40 paintings exemplifying the creativity of children who, in some cases, never thought to pick up a pencil or brush to express themselves on canvas. The foundation is hosting its fourth annual art contest in San Miguel in April.
CAF has reached out to surrounding villages to provide classes with instruction in art to the neediest children on the outskirts of San Miguel.
The children participating in these classes receive instruction from qualified local art teachers under the direction of Ernesto de la Pena Folch, the foundation’s director and head of art education. The inspiring Folch was director of the prestigious federal cultural institution Bellas Artes of San Miguel de Allende and is dedicated to the principle of enriching the lives of children through art.
Hannah Jarmain, founder of the foundation, invites you to celebrate Children’s Day this year by coming to see the grand exhibit of 101 Kids in the Art (Ciento y un Niños en el Arte), showcasing the top young artists of San Miguel.
At the exhibit grand opening on Thursday, April 4, at 6pm, you will meet all these young talents with their proud parents and grandparents in attendance. The Mayor, Mauricio Trejo, and his daughter will also be there to congratulate them.
Throughout the two last weekends in April, to celebrate Children’s Day, free art classes will be offered by the Children’s Art Foundation teachers at the Presidencia courtyard to hundreds of creative youngsters.
It is our goal to foster the artistic talent and enrich the children’s lives through art, to give them a higher level of self-confidence and boost self esteem during the most vulnerable developmental years.
For the love of children, we hope you will take a moment to visit the children’s special exhibit.
