Tiles build a strong foundation for the future

By Carol Weicker

Feed the Hungry San Miguel’s efforts make all the difference in the lives of more than 4,000 children; but there are thousands more hungry children that we are well aware of and have not been able to reach out to… not yet. The thing about feeding hungry children is that tomorrow they will be hungry again. When FTHSM goes into a community it is with a promise to stay as long as we are needed. The organization is the well-oiled machine that gets the job done, but the job itself, begins and ends in the caring hearts of our donors and volunteers

After decades of steady growth of responding to the “poorest of the poor” communities in San Miguel’s municipality with children in need and raising the necessary funds to serve these hungry children, in 2008-09 we added a record nine kitchens serving 987 children between the ages of three and eleven. Early in 2010, we realized that our distribution center was “maxed out” and the Board of Trustees was faced with a very difficult and heart-wrenching decision: stop taking on new communities until FTHSM could solidly position itself for future growth. Logistically, it was the right decision and yet it was impossible to say “no” to two more desperate villages that asked for help… several others continue to wait.

Today, a new distribution center on the edge of town has dramatically increased our efficiency in serving the 27 current communities with Feed the Hungry San Miguel kitchens, but more than that, it has positioned us to reach out to the additional thousands of hungry children who also need our help. It is time to answer the real and existing need for meals for hungry children in our growing municipality. That is why the Board of Trustees has decided to implement a very necessary “Foundation for Future Growth” campaign. With the success of this campaign, Feed the Hungry will be positioned to double the number of hungry children we feed over the next decade. The need exists and is pressing… hungry children don’t develop properly or learn well in school.

Naturally it is only with generous donations that we can begin down the path toward our ultimate goal: no child in San Miguel will know the pain of hunger. You can affect a much better future for the children who need our help through the Foundation for Future Growth campaign today with a tax-deductible donation of US$1,000 (or the peso equivalent). Our goal is to raise US$100,000 by August 1, 2013.

As part of the Foundation for Future Growth campaign Lucinda Johnson of Anima Designs has generously donated her talents to create a “Ceramic Tapestry” which will be installed on a wall at our new distribution center, and will be comprised of individual hand-carved ceramic tiles. A renowned ceramic designer, Johnson has interpreted traditional Otomi animal and bird designs to create eight whimsical and colorful designer tiles. For each US$1,000 gift, your name or the name of a person you wish to honor or memorialize will be inscribed on one of these 8” x 8” tiles. In addition to being a part of the tile wall at the Feed the Hungry Center, you will also receive a commemorative tile for yourself, as a reminder that you too took part in Feed the Hungry’s effort to eliminate hunger in San Miguel’s children. Your tile will truly become part of our Foundation for Future Growth. Leave your check at La Conexión Box 636, donate online at www.feedthehungrysma.org, or call campaign coordinator, Janice Zimolzak at (415) 154-9408 to learn about the importance of this campaign, the terms and pledges that are available to you, and Feed the Hungry’s sustainable programs. Your contributions are the bricks and mortar of our Foundation.
