Questions and purr-fect answers

Question: I am disappointed that the kitten I adopted last year has become so independent that she refuses to sit on my lap or accept more than a brief petting. Do you have any guaranteed lap cats?
Answer: Although we offer no guarantees, we do know that older kittens or adult cats are more predictable in their behavior. Dior is a beautiful cream-colored girl about nine months old who allows the volunteers no more than 10 seconds to settle in before making a beeline for their laps. Charly and Nacho are also great choices.
Q: I want to adopt a cat and I’m a sucker for a great story. Do you have any cats with sad histories?
A: Several months ago, in response to sounds of distress from the vacant lot adjoining the SPA, two volunteers found a cat trying to camouflage herself in a prickly bush while surrounded by snarling dogs. After a tricky rescue, we took her in and realized she was weak, bedraggled, and emaciated. After several weeks of being unresponsive to food or affection, she seemed too depressed to thrive. However one day, determined to relish life, she made a dramatic turnaround, living up to the name we gave her — Milagro. Now she is a happy, healthy, chunky affectionate girl who loves people and laps, but is not fond of other cats. (And you can guess how she feels about dogs!)
Q: I’m looking for a particular kitten. I want a seven-month-old little gray tabby and white female with close-set eyes and a little monkey-like adorable face who is an absolute charmer, both playful and affectionate. Can you help me?
A: Wow! What a coincidence! We have your dream kitten and her name is Jersey Girl. I’d describe her, but you’ve already portrayed her perfectly.
Q: Do you have a cat who will answer to her name, follow me around, and gaze at me adoringly with rapt attention?
A: Absolutely. Every one of our cats fits that description. Just open a can of cat food. To make the moment last a little longer, pause a few seconds before placing the cat food on the floor. If you require more than this amount of devotion, I will refer you to our dog people.
