Foro San Carlos project will be audited

In a city council meeting, the hiring of a specialist in structures, who will determine whether the structure of the Foro San Carlos (band shell) can be reinforced and its construction completed, was authorized. The local government is also planning an integrated project for the upper area of the city that includes the aerodrome, universities, Bicentennial Park and even the 2013 San Miguel Fair.
In January, the construction of the Foro San Carlos was stopped by the administration, because the structure could collapse. Édgar Bautista, director of Urban Development, commented that there was an overload on the tubular supports of the concha acústica that could cause major damage if the problem was not fixed. For that reason, he said that to determine the extent of the damage, a close examination should be conducted by a structural specialist, who could suggest a course of action. The band shell project was initiated by Mayor Luz María Núñez to attract more tourism to the city by attracting events with international appeal. The total cost of the band shell has been estimated at 21 million pesos; 15 million have already been spent.
A few days ago, the city council approved a proposal from the municipal comptroller to hire a structural specialist with the aim of determining the risks of the current band-shell infrastructure and the financial viability of the project. Based on the reports from that specialist, the local government will decide whether the construction of the Foro can be completed. The city council also authorized a financial audit for the Foro to determine whether excessive expenses have been incurred.
According to Mauricio Trejo, the investment has been made and it is a resource that must be recovered. “It would be a shame to lose that investment. With the results from the specialist we will know if we can reinforce the structure and complete its construction,” he said. Trejo also commented that for the upper area of the city currently there is a project to improve access to the universities on the road to Dr. Mora, as well as for improving the aerodrome. They are also working on a plan for the best use of the Módulo COMUDAJ (sports building) and for holding the San Miguel Fair in Parque Bicentenario, which could have another name by then. Trejo said that the advances for an industrial park in the city are at 95 percent, and it definitely will be constructed.
