La Nave Art Lab opens with Mario Cabrera’s painting exhibit “Chatarra”

This Saturday, February 16 at 7pm will be the inauguration of “Chatarra,” a painting exhibition by the artist Mario Cabrera at La Nave Art Lab, a new art project within Art Print Photo Gallery. After six years of solely focusing on photography, the gallery opens this exhibition as part of a new project aimed at the promotion and exhibition of other artistic mediums such as painting, sculpture and installation art. Art Print Photo Gallery will remain in the patio gallery dedicated to photography, and in the near future La Nave Art Lab will be expanding into another space, nearby on Aparicio Street.

Mario Cabrera was born in Mexico City, and educated in Italy and at the San Carlos Art Academy in Mexico City. With extraordinary talent and creativity, he has labored over 20 years in painting as well as sculpture. He has exhibited in solo and collective exhibitions in Mexico, USA, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. Within his most recent series of painting and sculpture “Chatarra” (Junk) he manifests a clear metamorphosis of the human condition depicted in assemblages painted with fragmented waste. Shreds of canvas, and “junk” in general, constitute these effigies of life. His stark compositions give a sense of magnificence to the canvas, while submerged in a somewhat sinister atmosphere of dark backgrounds, totemic characters appear constructed harmoniously in form and color, out of pieces of machinery and useless junk. Some of these characters also decorated with used and decrepit symbols, present themselves in the spirit of another era, like unsung heroes who commemorate a past glory. Barely 100 years ago, Italian Futurism, saw machines and progress as a prosperous future for humanity, for Mario Cabrera machines are its waste, left over in the pantheon of modern civilization in a more static and silent planet.

Nevertheless, these paintings and assemblages are also images critical of progress, and excessive exploitation of humanity, which in turn, produces excess waste. These works are in themselves architecture, a careful construction consisting of poor elements. They are the memory of a society, the trace of existence, for the artist, in his own words “ a metaphor of the world and the human condition: the transition from expendable to redeemable”

The exhibition will continue at La Nave Art Lab at Art Print Photo Gallery through March
