Artists for Amistad
By Judith deForest
February is an energetic and active month in San Miguel. Teamwork, generosity and amistad (the Spanish word for friendship) are at the forefront, particularly in a heartfelt project combining the talents of international Canadian artists Nisha and Dan Ferguson and Amistad Canada, a charity which funds projects in San Miguel.
Dan and Nisha create enchanting ceramic art works. From tiny, whimsical creatures and soaring animals balancing bowls on their backs; to show-stopping multi-tiered townscapes, DaNisha sculptures are unique and immediately recognizable. With free-spirited colors and floating design, this husband and wife team collaborate to bring innocence and wonder to their unique one-of-a-kind pieces.
Long time San Miguel residents, Dan and Nisha enthusiastically support Amistad Canada – one of the projects that they fund at CASA is its School of Professional Midwifery. During February, if you mention CASA or Amistad Canada when you make a purchase at DaNisha Sculpture they will donate 20 percent of the sale to support the CASA School. This arrangement is open to all customers. The CASA Professional Midwifery School provides an accredited degree program for its students and delivers reproductive health care in San Miguel and in many rural communities.
Inspiration began during childhood for Nisha and Dan, each fascinated with the world of drawing and art. Summers spent growing up in their respective family cottages on Canada’s magnificent lakes were filled with adventure and stories, feeding the awe and innocence captured in today’s works. World travel followed by study at art school in Toronto ultimately led to romance and marriage. Artistic collaboration was the natural consequence.
This shared passion of two impressionable children, coupled with refined artistic talents and a world vision, are at the heart of the DaNisha collection. Dan is its master sculptor and mold maker, while Nisha is its fanciful designer and painter. As a result, DaNisha’s works are recognized worldwide for their unique energy and joie de vivre. This same ethereal spirit extends to Gravityworks, Nisha’s popular circus performance troupe, also based in San Miguel.
