One year ago this month, my fiancé, Rene, and I visited the SPA in search of a new cat. We arrived on a hectic Saturday morning, passing many pets and their owners waiting outside to see the vet, and were shown inside to see the cats. The staff and volunteers were busy, but friendly and helpful, and showed us a pair of five-month-old kittens, siblings who had recently been dropped off. One of them, a soft orange cat with green eyes, a sweet face, and a bushy tail, was soon whisked into the cat carrier to be brought home to meet his new ‘sister,’ Panchita, whom we had adopted a few months before.
Although we were nervous about introducing the two cats and about whether we had chosen the right one to adopt, we were reassured by the input from Helen, a volunteer who works with the cats. Helen listened patiently as Rene and I told her about Neko, a kitten we had adopted the previous September, who had become very ill about six weeks later and had had to be put down. While we wanted another cat to keep Panchita company, we were nervous about having to go through such a sad experience again. Helen sat with us and talked about each of the SPA cats so we could decide which one would be a good fit. We left to think about our options, and the next time we visited the SPA we were ready to choose.
Now Milo has grown into a timid but affectionate cat that loves to play with toy mice and has learned to sit and beg to receive treats. He has slowly convinced Panchita, who is a bit temperamental, to be more tolerant, and he often nudges her into grooming his face and ears. Milo loves to run around in our patio and chase insects, and he chatters at our neighbor through her second-story window until she obligingly throws treats for him to chase, his favorite game. He is very vocal, and his never-ending sounds and funny personality endear him to everyone who meets him. We are so happy we adopted him!
If you are considering adopting an additional cat or two, please visit the SPA (Monday-Saturday, 11am-2pm, Los Pinos 7, phone 152-6124) to find the perfect match for your family. All our available cats and dogs are shown at www.spasanmiguel.org and www.facebook.com/spasanmiguel.
