Alex de Pue, band, not just fiddling around
Fri, Feb 1, 7pm
Nemesio Diez 10
Alex de Pue might have been just your typical violin prodigy. He began studying classical violin at age five, won his first university-level competition at age 10, and at 14 won a competition that entitled him to perform at Carnegie Hall as Concertmaster for the National Guild Youth Symphony Orchestra… an auspicious beginning that might have led him to a career of acclaim in concert halls throughout the world. But somewhere around his seventh birthday, Alex Depue crossed a line — stepped out of the rarefied air of the symphony hall, traded his tux for a pair of jeans and became (collective gasp) a fiddler!
For nearly 20 years he has dominated fiddle competitions all over the US, reigned as the Michigan State Fiddling Champion from 1994-1998; won the first-place trophy at the Walnut Valley National Fiddling Championship in Winfield, Kansas in 1999 and 2005; won first place in the Halletsville, Texas, “Gone to Texas National Fiddling Championship” in 2000; won first place in the Alabama state fiddle contest in 2006 and 2007; and won first place in the California state fiddle contest in 2007. Also in 2006, he was deemed “Fiddle King” at the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention.
Alex served as a judge at the National Oldtime Fiddling Championship (Weiser, Idaho) in 2008 and in 2010 and 2011 he won first place in the Twin Fiddle division with Sedra Bistodeau while ranking among the top 10 finalists in the Grand National Championship division.
In 2007, he joined legendary rock guitarist Steve Vai for a world tour that took him across North America, South America and Europe. He is also featured on Vai’s 2009 Grammy-nominated DVD release, “Steve Vai: Where the Wild Things Are.” His #1 YouTube hit, Owner of a Lonely Heart has been viewed worldwide over four million times.
Lucky San Miguel music lovers will get a chance to enjoy Alex’s genre-bending style
January 31 when he’ll be rockin’ at the Hotel Nena. Classic Jazz, Country, Rock, Latin and Modern Tango will come together in a colorful tapestry of sound and rhythm, sure to entertain and delight. Alex will be accompanied by Miguel Favero on percussion. Rounding out the band are Gilberto Gonzalez on upright bass and Papacho Sirdey on piano, both talented local musicians.
The February 1 performance will be an intimate dinner concert (limited seating, reservations required). For times, ticket prices, reservations and more info, contact the Hotel Nena, Nemesio Diez 10, 154-7129.
