Un día perfecto en San Miguel
By Jade Arroyo
“Coffee” is many people’s first thought in the morning. To begin the day with a positive vibe, you can take shelter from the windy morning at La Mesa Grande (Zacateros and Pila Seca); its communal tables invite you to friendship and conversation. You can pair your beverage with some freshly baked goodies.
At the street popularly known as “Calle Nueva” (Nemesio Diez) is Cafe Rama, a relaxed and hip place. The food is delicious, with options for everybody — go for the chicken curry, the most requested dish in the place. If you brought your pet with you on your trip, here you can both sit outside on the terrace and afterwards go for a walk in the Juarez Park.
After a great lunch you can head off to do some shopping. Mexico in general, and San Miguel in particular, is full of excellent silversmiths and designers — their skill in this ancient craft is exceptional. A good way to support their work is wearing the jewelry they make. If you’re looking for a treat for yourself or for someone special, pay a visit to Joyería David (Umaran ). This silver shop is an emblematic one in town. You can take your choice among a large variety of options and styles. There are beautiful pieces of Mexican design, like filigree earrings or belt buckles shaped like lizards.
To conclude the day and relax a little, why not pay homage to a proudly Mexican drink and have a little mescal to warm up? At Correo 17 is El Tinieblo, a place with an old traditional cantina feel. If you fear the straight mescal, try the mescalita, a cocktail made with ice, fruit and mescal. It is delicious.
