Singing the praise of older cats

By Barbara Webber

Did you know that the sentimental bond between humans and cats can be scientifically corroborated? The region of the brain that deals with emotions is identical in cats and humans, and cats have one of the highest average IQs among non-human animals. This is evident to me every day I spend with the adult cats at the SPA.

Oh, sure, everyone loves little kittens; they are fun and furry. But I am more taken with our adult cats. They come in all sizes and colors and personalities. There is strong, manly, grey and white Charly, who is in control, but still loves a lap. There is delicate Dior, with the beautiful blue eyes and markings, who purrs up a storm and also loves lap time. There are Maggie and Molly who arrived at the SPA with their litters of kittens. The kittens were adopted long ago, but their moms are still with us. Both are beautiful, very wildcat-looking, and would make wonderful pets. There is Naranja, who is just getting used to people, and I am sure will turn out to be someone’s devoted pet once he gets over his shyness. Can you guess his color? There is small, black and white Sassy. She loves a lap and a hug and would follow you around like a puppy. There are many more wonderful cats; too many to include here. Some would be best off as a single pet, but let’s face it, they all live together in one space at the SPA and getting along fine for the most part. In fact, it is hard to imagine 26 humans occupying the same space and get along as well as these cats do.

Our cats welcome the volunteers daily with affection and longing for private time. They love their food and place in the sun for naps. They are all litter-box trained and interact every day with different volunteers. Please consider one of our wonderful adult cats for your companion as you begin 2013. They may not be kittens, but they will fill your life with joy. They deserve their shot at living with comfort and love.

Visit them and their canine and feline friends at the SPA, Monday-Saturday, 11am-2pm, Los Pinos 7, phone 152-6124. Some will be at the Jardin on Thursdays from 11-1. Follow us on Facebook: Volunteer and discover for yourself what I have learned.
