SPA anniversaries for Blondie and Dorita: A New Year’s resolution!

By Irene Diamant

December marks Blondie’s fourth year at the SPA. She has seen so many of her shelter mates come and go, but not her. Why? She’s a pretty girl, small/medium-sized with a warm, honey-blonde coat. Her big brown eyes penetrate your soul. About five years old, this sweetheart is easy to walk and has an adorable and surprising playful side.

So why hasn’t she been adopted? Probably because she is shy. It takes a little while for Blondie to trust strangers. In truth, a few days of affection will bring out her loving nature. We’ve even gone so far as trying to rename her from Güera to Blondie because people thought her name meant “war” instead of “blond” – we wanted to eliminate any mistaken preconception that might affect her adoptability. It seems that Blondie’s reluctance to show how much she enjoys a belly rub discourages people from trying to get to know her.

Last May, Dorita marked her fourth year at the SPA. Having the dubious honor of being our longest canine resident, she was only five weeks old when she arrived. She is a beautiful, brown/tan medium-large slender female who is nervous with new people. She sits on command, walks well on a leash, but jumps at any sudden movement and backs away from those she doesn’t know. Dorita needs a patient and gentle owner who will spend the time needed to make her feel safe and comfortable. In recent months, she has undergone a small transformation and, with some of us, she saunters on up for a greeting and to be petted. It’s heartwarming to see this change.

Shyness is an issue for some of our most wonderful dogs such as Blondie and Dorita and keeps them from shining at a first impression. Our experience has taught us that once shy dogs become members of families, all this changes and their true nature comes to the fore. Still waters run deep.

Our New Year’s resolution is to help people discover the magic of these two lovely dogs and find them good homes. Their time is now. Spread the word!

See for SPA information. Join Facebook (it’s easy!) and follow us at with albums of all our cats and dogs available for adoption (biographies, pictures, and videos). We’re at the Jardin on Thursdays from 11am-1pm with some of our available pets. Happy Holidays!
