Recent work from Silvia Velásquez and the pleasures of synesthesia

By Silvia Velásquez

A San Miguel resident since 1992 until eighteen months ago when I moved to the south of France to paint, I’m back in town to show “20×30,” my most recent work. “20×30 is a series of small oil paintings on wood and linen done in 2012, with scenes from rooftops seen from my apartment in downtown Montpellier, landscapes from the region with rocks and water–my favorite subject–and lavender fields from La Provence. The series “20×30” is defined by spontaneous brushstrokes of lively colors that reflect a brightness and warmth and latitude that, in a pleasant manifestation of synesthesia, exudes scents from the French countryside. Velásquez’ work can also be seen at La Conexión, Aldama 3.
