Who can resist a puppy?
By Megan Gabel
The SPA has a bunch of irresistible puppies! Penny, Macy, and Scooby are our most recent additions. A Good Samaritan fed them for a few days at a school, but removed them when she saw that the puppies were being kicked and abused by some children. The residual effects of this abuse are apparent. The puppies pile on each other for comfort. At first, they quivered in fear when we petted them. Now they are becoming braver and are more open to affection. With kindness and love, they are sure to blossom.
Brandy, abandoned at the train station, and Alejandro, found on the street, were so young when they came to the SPA that we had to find them foster homes. Motherless, they needed constant care, including being hand-fed every two hours. Now full of piss and vinegar, these two are outgoing, friendly, affectionate, and very curious.
Gracie, Rowdy, Ace, Dolly, and Pepper came with their mother, Sasha, who had been nursing them in an empty lot near Mega. A band of SMA citizens noticed the family’s situation and the SPA and SAMM joined together to save them. Only a week old when they arrived in September, these puppies have transformed from tiny mounds of fur with closed eyes to bouncy, adorable bundles of energy, eager to play.
Until recently, Cappy and Zeke were the elder statesmen of Puppy World. Having just been moved to socialize with the older dogs, they now have collars on and are learning how to walk on a leash just like the big boys. Cappy, about 5 months old, and Zeke, almost 6 months old, are very playful and love to receive and give attention. Cappy is particularly affectionate. Zeke vies for equal time.
What always astounds us is how these puppies, in fact, all our dogs, despite their backgrounds, some of which are horrendous, are open and loving and ready to trust their hearts to a new human friend. The joy that’s there for the mere cost of adoption (350 pesos) is endless. Come to meet these wonderful dogs at the SPA, Monday-Saturday, 11am-2pm, Los Pinos 7, phone 152-6124. Check out our website www.spasanmiguel.org. For pictures and videos of all the featured puppies, see www.facebook.com/spasanmiguel which also has albums of all our cats and dogs available for adoption (biographies, pictures, and videos). Volunteer to walk dogs and get in shape at the same time.
