“Wear Me,” safely dressed
By Georgina Acosta
Today among youth around the world and here in San Miguel de Allende, there still exists a lack of information about sexual and reproductive health. Just as alarming, unplanned teen pregnancy has continued to rise due in part to the taboos that still exist regarding sexual health and education. This not only hurts the future of young people, but also their right to decide whether to have an active and completely safe sex life. It is important to note that sexually transmitted infections, including HIV/AIDS, are issues that affect everyone, and not just a certain population. Therefore, it is very necessary to have the proper and correct counseling and education regarding contraceptive methods and prevention.

The Peer Health Counselors at the nonprofit CASA, AC work daily in the most vulnerable communities in and around San Miguel, providing workshops and sexual and reproductive health education. Our goal is to eliminate unplanned teen pregnancies, as well as the spread of HIV, which is currently growing among the adolescent population.
For that reason, CASA invites you this December 1 to our second annual Condom Fashion Show to raise awareness for World HIV/AIDS Day. You can purchase your tickets in advance at La Conexión on Aldama 3, or La Victoriana located on Hernández Macías 72. All of the proceeds go to benefit CASA and its nine programs dedicated to bringing health and education services to youth and women. Professional designers along with amateurs will be constructing unique and innovative designs using condoms as the main material of construction. Wear Me seeks to raise awareness among the population in regard to condom use and practicing safe sex, free of HIV.
The designs will also be put on auction to raise money for CASA, and in turn, help us carry out our mission of improving the quality of life for Mexico’s most vulnerable communities by empowering youth to make a positive impact in their lives, and the lives of those who surround them, through employment and education opportunities. Remember that without education, there is no evolution.
