Seeking San Miguel Playwrights

By Mark Saunders

Calling all San Miguel writers! If you are a full or part-time resident you are invited to submit a play to the inaugural presentation of Diez Minutos: San Miguel’s International Festival of 10-Minute Plays. This fully-staged production of eight plays will be in English and will take place in March of 2013 at Shelter Theater. Plays must be sent electronically and received by midnight on November. 30.

Audiences around the world have received the ten-minute play with an enthusiastic round of applause. Actors, producers and directors like them because they explore and present an amazing range of subject and emotion in a simple, easy-to-mount, low-cost package.  Audiences love the different voices and styles offered during the course of a single evening.

The 10-minute play was introduced at the Actors Theatre of Louisville’s 1977 Humana Festival. Since then this dynamic and challenging form, “the American theater’s haiku,” has been embraced by accomplished playwrights worldwide, including David Henry Hwang, Steven Dietz, Tina Howe, Athol Fugard, Brian Friel, Theresa Rebeck and Tony Kushner.
