2012 Awards Ceremony
By Hannah Jarmain
You, the children of San Miguel, are very special. I don’t think there are other children in the world who are as creative, inspiring and talented as the children of San Miguel.
When we issued the contest parameters to you all in May this year, we asked you to paint and tell your stories. Not only did you paint over 600 masterpieces you have written 600 beautiful stories that each deserve a Nobel Prize for literature.
Your stories made me laugh and they also made me cry!
If we had more money we would have published all 600 stories. It will be a book this thick!!! I wish the House of Culture of Mexico would do that for us so that everyone can enjoy them.
But in spite of the difficult economic time, we did it! Thanks to Gerardo Espinosa and Artprint! We have published this small and proud book for the Children of San Miguel. Creative Children Of San Miguel. It contains 41 sensational paintings and 69 amazing, heart-wrenching stories. Your stories!
Your stories told me what happened in your life, the relationships you have with your parents, your brothers and sisters, your friends and your dog, and the people whom you love.
Your stories took us on wonderful adventures into outer space, inside the volcano, up the mountains and down the bottom of the sea. You met crocodiles that only eat fruits and books that swim like fish.
You had to fight the aliens, befriend robots and face the big bad witch. But you, our heroes always win. Thanks to your courage.
You told me of the house built by your grandpa and the garden planted by your grandma. Although your grandparents are gone now, the house and the trees and the garden stay forever with their spirit. You’re proud of your heritage.
Your stories reminded us that we must save this beautiful planet: don’t waste water, don’t throw garbage, don’t contaminate our rivers and seas. Save our nature.
And one day in San Miguel, when things got really bad, the earth was dry and scorched, trees were dying and people were leaving San Miguel; the town was sad and deserted!
You prayed and God told Saint San Miguel Archangel to make rain.
So it rained and rained and rained over San Miguel, trees and flowers came back to life.
And so did the tourists. With your faith! Everything is fine again in this wonderful town.
You told us how to handle the big drug problems in Mexico: “Just say no!” you said!
When all of us, just say no to drugs, the problem will go away… in time.
Imagination! Critical thinking! Passion!! Those are what the Children’s Art Foundation teaches every Saturday in the campo.
In our “Literacy through Art” program, not only do we teach children painting techniques and colour mixing, but our wonderful teachers: Jose Luis, Oscar, Irineo, Rafael, Mariana, Efrain and Josefina, will teach you how to think, how to imagine and how to dream.
Because an artist can create anything he or she wants on a canvas, so you can begin to create the future that you want for yourselves, with one single thought. Think!
Set your goal! With determination and hard work, you can do it!
I want this book Creative Children of San Miguel to be published year after year, with your stories of hope and dreams in it. When you grow up to become what you wanted to be: artists, musicians, architects, doctors, nurses, engineers, teachers, and football players, the Mayor or even the President of Mexico. From nothing but a single thought! And determination.
You will open this little book and read the stories that you wrote when you were 10 years old. And you will tell the little children in your life that “ I had a dream, and I did it!”
