New playground completed in Parque Juárez

Amigos del Parque, a nonprofit organization, completed restoration of the playground area at Parque Juárez on October 29. Mayor Mauricio Trejo said that the recognition belongs to the civic association and announced that there will be a budget for this kind of work in the future.

On October 12, 2011, a group of women concerned about the poor condition of the playground where their children spend time and play with their friends took control of the organization Amigos del Parque and set a goal of collecting two million pesos by May 2012 to improve the playground. According to Elaine Proctor, a member of the organization, they started working with a budget of US$30,000, and at the end of the project, Gioumar Paradies, president of Amigos del Parque, said they collected and invested more than 2.5 million pesos in the restoration; the funding was raised from the private and public sectors.

Members from nonprofit organizations and local and state government gathered for the opening of the restored playground, which has swings, musical instruments, slides, painted stones, webs and a new recycled rubber floor. The space has the capacity for at least 150 children to play at the same time. Mayor Mauricio Trejo said, “This is an effort and achievement of the organized civic organization, and as a father I appreciate and want to say thanks to Amigos del Parque for making the restoration a reality.” Trejo announced that he had a talk with federal legislator Luis Alberto Villarreal and along with the city council the municipality will approve a budget for work by nonprofit organizations in order to support projects like this. “The civic organizations will decide where, how and when to apply the financial resources. San Miguel will have a successful future as long as it has the NGOs,” commented Trejo.

Paradies said that the Ecology Department will take care of the space. The playground will be open every day from 6am to 10pm. Paradies also said that the organization will keep working on improving the park, including a special area for the elderly to exercise, an area for young people and a designated dog area. They also plan to rebuild the bathrooms. They already have architectural plans, which will require an investment of 400,000 pesos to build.
