A perfect Day in San Miguel

By Jade Arroyo

For breakfast

El Pegaso, Corregidora 6, 8:30am-10pm, cerrado miércoles/closed on Wednesday

This restaurant is a visual experience by itself. It has a colourful Mexican decoration; the walls are filled with painted tin boxes picturing popular and folk Mexican culture. The house specialities are chiles en nogada (available all year round) and its desserts. Try the waffles for breakfast.

Lagundi, la esquina del arte, Umarán 17, Lun/Mon-Sáb/Sat, 10am-2pm, 4-7:30pm

Here you can find a large variety of imported magazines, art books, art supplies (if you’re short of charcoal or pastels for your sketches of the town), CDs of local artists’ music and an art gallery.

Café La Ventana, Sollano 11, Lun/Mon-Sáb/Sat, 8am-9pm, Dom/Sun, 9am-3pm

You can look through your new magazine or book and have a good cup of coffee at this charming place. Or if you prefer, ask for take out through the window visible from the street, which gives the café its name.

Galería Izamal, Mesones 80, 11am-3pm, 4pm-8pm

This artistic cooperative is almost 20 years old, currently having 10 artist members. The advantage here is that you can deal directly with the artist and get acquainted with him or her, and buy fine art and jewellery without intermediates. The gallery is located right next to Teatro Ángela Peralta; it is open daily and also offers postcards, prints and T-shirts

with motifs of the artwork, the perfect souvenir to give your friends back home.

Nieves/Ice cream stand, Hernández Macías and Canal

This stand is one of the best and oldest in town. These are delicious hand crafted ice creams. Here are flavors for all tastes, from classics like chocolate and vanilla to others like coffee and cajeta.

A Comfort dinner

El Tomato, Mesones 62, 12-10pm

This restaurant with Italian and Argentinian influences seems a good choice for those who love pasta and good meat. Empanadas and a glass of wine are a match made in heaven. There is a nice selection of South American wines—just ask the waiter what could be a good pairing. Fridays night there live, young tango music, sentimental and very fun.
